This Isn't a Fairly Tale... But, 

Once upon a time there was a young man, much like you, who was eager to get going on life's road. He had hopes and dreams for what would come next, the same as you do. He loved his family and was loved in return. He had a gift for making friends and had many friends of all ages. Joey was a DHS superfan; he loved his job, his community, sports, and especially UF. Joey loved helping people, and many people he met throughout his life felt he was their best friend, and they were right! His enthusiasm in everything he did was as infectious as his laugh, and his fundamental goodness and kindness were examples to others.

Not All Fairy Tales Have Happy Endings...

On January 20, 2015, Joey passed away after suffering a stroke at the age of 32, with so much more life to live. Our family and his family of friends were devastated by his loss.

Where Did Joey’s Life Take Us?

One of the ways we honor Joey’s memory is by offering scholarships to graduating seniors who demonstrate the same qualities of enthusiasm and caring for others in our community as he did.

This year, we are very happy to be able to offer four scholarships of $3500 each.

For each $3500 awarded, the requirements are:

• Applicant should be a graduating senior with a minimum 2.5 GPA

• Applicant should be college bound in the 2023-2024 academic year

• A 500 word essay should be submitted describing the way or ways in which you have gone out of your way, gone “above and beyond” to make the life of a fellow student or community member demonstrably better. Please be specific.

• Include a list of the scholarships you plan to receive or have already received. Tell what your career goals are, your projected areas of study, and the schools to which you’ve applied. In addition, tell what clubs and/or organizations to which you belong, either in school or in the community

• Submit two letters from non-family members attesting to the reasons you are deserving of this award

Deadline for submission is Tuesday, May 9, 2023. Winners will be notified by email.
